People travel there every day for one reason, to pay respects to Pokémon they’ve lost. The tower is full of ghosts you can’t see without a Silph Scope, a gadget whose own slogan promises to “Make the Invisible Plain to See!” Without it, your Pokémon are “too scared to move.”

Then a ghost Marowak blocks the way. “Be gone... Intruders...” she says. In the original games you have to defeat her to free her spirit. But she was a mother who died protecting her Cubone from Team Rocket, and that warning was never a threat. Maybe everything in Lavender Town sounds scarier than it means.

What the games never show you

You only see the town. You never see what surrounds it. This is our imagination, so we get to decide, and we like to think the land around Lavender Town is stunning: highlands, waterfalls, lakes, forests, all of it too beautiful to describe. Maybe no tourist was ever brave enough to stay and see it. Maybe the residents had one of those creepy looks on their face when they said "You should stay the night!", and that sent people running, when in reality, they were just happy to see people enjoy their little town. And maybe once the player calmed her spirit and drove Team Rocket out, the wildlife were able to come home again, populating the beautiful ecological diversity of the town.

Who gathers there

The town has always been a refuge for the ones without a home. A kindly elder named Fuji, whose name means wisteria, a purple-flowered vine, runs a Volunteer House for orphaned and abandoned Pokémon. Some say he used to live in Cinnabar Island's Pokemon Mansion, which has also been abandoned. Cubone wears its dead mother’s skull, and “when it becomes lonesome, it is said to cry loudly.” In the later games, the tower becomes a radio station and the graves move to a place called the House of Memories.

So maybe none of the Pokémon here are really “there” at all. Maybe they’re memories, or wandering spirits, visible only to those who know how to look. And maybe they gather where they are honored most, in the town where people still come every day to say their names.

One night in Lavender Town

Dusk. It starts small. On the porch in Little Ghouls and Gourds, the youngest residents carve pumpkins in the last warm hour, one wrapped in a blanket and playing ghost. Maybe it’s only a costume. Maybe the line between who’s here and who isn’t is blurrier than anyone admits. But the night isn’t welcoming to everyone. In Lavender Squad, the Squirtle Squad slips through the lavender in bedsheets, maybe to blend in, maybe because dressing as the scary thing is the easiest way to be let in. Overhead, Team Rocket’s balloon hangs black against the moon, the same kind of intruder that once took a mother from her child. Maybe that’s what the town has been guarding against all along.

Twilight. Glow and the Ghostly is the secret the games never showed you: a still lake, a dock, a forest dyed purple, snowy peaks, and every unseen thing drifting to the water’s edge. Maybe the dock is where they wait. Maybe they’re waiting for each other.

Midnight. Then come the places the world forgets. Gutter Magic hides a festival in an alley, where Trubbish throw the best party in town and a Mismagius is the hero of the hour. Maybe the ones everyone walks past make the loudest joy. Melting Mansion is a grand house that lost its owners long ago, now all dust and cobwebs, with a Gengar who seems to have taken the lease. Maybe a home is just wherever someone is glad you came.

Deep night. Haunted Highlands is the long walk: waterfalls, bare trees, a river carrying you toward the town, and small shadows keeping you company on a road you thought you were taking alone. Maybe every ghost story starts with someone traveling a long way to find somewhere to belong. And in Witching Hour, a house on bird legs strolls through the dark forest. In the old tales it belongs to Baba Yaga, and people fear it. Maybe it’s the opposite: a home that walks, so no one has to wait for one.

Dawn. Pink Skies Lullabies is the first moment all night that nothing is hiding. A lake glows pink, a Dragonair rises, and a Jigglypuff sings. Maybe the lullaby is for everyone who finally found each other.

The secret

Maybe Lavender Town was never haunted, per say. Maybe it’s a place made of remembering, where the ones with nowhere else to be gather because they’re honored there, and all they ever wanted was each other.
